Why is thorium lens that flavored with yellow soap looks interesting? I thought it was somewhat expensive, as soon as I got a lens in a good condition and in a good condition, I just walked in the season when the cherry blossoms scatter.

Lens and manufacturer introduction

Carl Zeiss Jena Pacolar 50 mm F1.8

A lens of Carl zeiss on the east side of Germany divided into the east and west after the world match. Although the characters of the housing are rubbed, it is wrong because it enters “Jena”.
The knowledge of this neighborhood has come to be able to say without any doubt in the second year to the old lens.

Here, the thorium oxide contained in the lens emits radiation, which is famous for yellowing the lens with time.
This phenomenon is not only a story of Zeiss, but thorium oxide lenses are popular around the world in this era and can be seen with various manufacturer lenses.
If you are a Japanese lens you will often see Takumar’s yellowing things on the market.

However, thorium (Thorium), yellowing is just like a filter, reflection in the lens such as halation seems to be suppressed and why it was very easy to take.

However, since the fact that the color is attached does not change, even if the adjustment ability of the modern camera is terrible, we did a tremendous falling way if it got a little shade.

So I fixed this time around 3500 K (Kelvin) this time.
It is impossible as a good weather daytime, but this kind of habit is also funny with the selfishness of the old lens.

Thorium color white balance adjustment

If you set the white balance to “AUTO”, I guess the camera at this time surely showed amazing white balance adjustment and conversely it would not be interesting, I tried setting it to “sunny” for the moment.

Stunning yellow taste!

Well interesting is fun but, as expected it is

I changed it to white balance “AUTO”.
I feel that the beige still remains thin as it gets yellowed.

Oh I thought that even this might be okay,

It has become a magnificent falling way.
The wall was almost entirely blue.
Even with the truly raw correction, this is going to break me.

Why is your name recognition low? Zeiss Pancolar50mm is great! Enjoying Thorium Lens on the streets - From Chitose Funabashi to Matsui Shrine.*
So this time around Kelvin, I fixed the white balance by manual setting.
Although the color changes somewhat where shade sunlight does not strike directly, if it is a fixed value, it can be adjusted all together at a time of raw development, so if you set it to auto during shooting, I thought it would be better than repairing.

I adjusted while taking a few pictures, but I wonder if this is OK.
It is about 3500 K (Kelvin). It is a figure that looks pretty much bluish if it is normal. At the time of raw development, we knocked down the balance of green and red fairly red.

For reference, if there is daytime sunshine, it is usually in the range of 5000K – 6000K.
Approaching 4000K it will be rather bluish.

As far as we have released the lenses around F 3.0, this Pancolar’s F1.8 is an intense blurred impression.

The minimum shooting distance is 35 cm, but I felt that I could get a little more, and the lens I used here was still the shortest distance shooting 50 cm to 60 cm, so I feel like getting close at hand.

Why is your name recognition low? Zeiss Pancolar50mm is great! Enjoying Thorium Lens on the streets - From Chitose Funabashi to Matsui Shrine.*
Is it a beautiful and straightforward, slightly stiff blur impression? It is hard to say that it is hard to understand what is in the back at this distance with liberation.

The focused surface is pretty sharp, and the blurring that can be used from F1.8 sometimes cleans up the surroundings somewhat even with a complicated frame.
It feels very easy to handle with a sharp feeling while having an old feeling.

The flowering petals are beautiful, the frame feels Japanese heart, but difficult without Pancolor relation!
I tried trying raising the shutter speed to gang, but it is hard to wait for a good wind, it is difficult to understand because the petals are small in the first place Cherry blossoms are.

Although these shots feel like all lenses will work well if taken with liberation, this Pancolar 50 mm is easy to take because of the fact that F1.8 helps and the peripheral light intensity drops strongly, the focusing surface remains is.

Shake around the image became outstanding.
About the water ripple in the upper right, the light which started soft and blurred from the center of the picture toward the edge seems to be blurring like a bubble blur when it approaches the edge.
Although it seems to be repeated many times, since the focusing surface is refreshing out, blurring of blurring does not matter so much.

The backside blur is melting beautifully, but the four corners seem to be slightly two line blurred.
This is also a range that does not matter.

Line depiction, color taste

In this section, we set the aperture as roughly F 8.0 so that you can see the depiction of the focus plane.

The color ride is also steady and it is the color saturation that is nice.

Although it is an inconspicuous opinion, it seems that the time when the zebra pattern was around was the best era when the old and new blended well and the texture was the best. It is a really selfish opinion. I like it.

It is a frame that blows out the exposure according to the shade, but the part that I want to keep and the expression of the four corners remain and I feel honest.
It is kind of a compliment.

What is this color with a sense of stability and emotion.
I adjusted the white balance a little, but I also took it out and this atmosphere is wonderful.

I wanted to give a little contrast.

Oh? Impression that blue has risen for some reason.
I think whether it feels tightened, but it is necessary to adjust the color. After all, the influence of yellowing seems not to be light.

Soft light in the shade.
It is slightly bluish, but do not adjust this as it sounds like this.
Also, although the ground is a little blurred, the aperture is squeezing as it is at F8.0.

The focusing surface is Sararito and Sharp, the contrast is not too dark, and the halation with the light turning into the lens barrel softer.
Although there may be places that are compatible with this shade, it seems to be the lens that the technology of just the right age gave birth.

Although it was truly greenish, I was thinking about adjusting the white balance by development, but it was pretty crumbled and I gave up quite difficult to adjust.
It’s been a while since we first adjusted the white balance of the camera, so the shade may have been a bit of a moment anymore.

In this shade of shade it seems that there is still no problem of white balance.

The shortest shooting distance is 35 cm, manufactured around 1968.
There are 8 diaphragm springs and the lens composition is a double Gauss type of 4 groups / 6 pieces.

Lens generations, roughly,
Those with the first leather F 2.0 / 50 mm wrapped with thin leather called gutta percha
The second generation F1.8 / 50 mm becomes the thorium lens of the zebra pattern model
Third generation Although it is also a zebra pattern, the lens configuration is changed to six groups of five lenses, and the lens material also changes
The fourth lens barrel is a black lens barrel
It seems there seems to be something, because the thorium lens of this time was good, others are also a bit nervous ~

Purchase details

With eBay lenses_vault_alpha 100% Positive feedback trader from shops including shipping costs 10,514 yen.
I think that it could be purchased affordably as a thorium lens.

I think that it is an impressive trader that I always put the same doll in the photograph sample photograph, and I think that I bought it well from this trader.
There are many photographs of the state of the lens, photographs that narrowed down the aperture that Nakayama is concerned, and many samples are also thankful suppliers.

In the lens that arrived, the diaphragm spring moves a little at the beginning and the end of the rotation of the focus ring, and it is a bit difficult for one person to adjust the focus at the end, but it is okay enough.
This trader, the best one does not come, but I feel that never came.

IseBay’s price range less than 10,000 yen to around 20,000 yen? I feel that relatively stable price and quality are lined up compared with other lenses.
If it is Yahoo auc, it is about 1.5 times to 2 times. It feels relatively high, and the mind that the plate is not active anymore.
I think it is a nice lens, but it seems not to be popular.
The yellowing lens looks a bit expensive.

I do not see much description of “bazaru (Haze)” with balsam cut out, although there are two bonded lenses in double Gauss.
There is nothing better but it seems to be better to be careful about the two laminated lenses that look like balsam scissors.

Flare, Ghost, Halation

I noticed it when I started taking pictures, but obviously it is hard to get halation compared to old old lenses.
It is influence of yellowing.

Will anything change the yellowing and the strength against this backlight will also be gone?

I think that it is good here.

It seems that there is no light source, the grass is receiving light and makes us feel the sun from behind, and although the F 8.0 stop shows the whole sharp feeling of sharpness, the blur that crossed the asphalt goes back I’m also directing the sense of distance.
A red color of accent flowers, a vermillion kick board that complements it, and a subtle color difference of a thin orange lane in the lower left.

At the time of Raw development, the brightness is matched somewhat by the exposure dose.

Even so, although the aperture value is different, somehow shutter speed 1/1000 and ISO 640 are together.
Since it is a record of metadata, there is no other choice but to describe it, I think that ISO will change considerably, but

Anyway, it seems to be perfect for bringing a line of sight to the middle in the peripheral light loss to F1.8.
It is fine to squeeze the squeezed picture, but is it easier to create a picture with liberation?

I also recently learned that “the spherical aberration” is that it is difficult to fit the focused surface in the middle due to liberation, or is it vocal?
I also convinced the theory after investigating.

Directing direction of shooting, as a portrait lens

With F 1.8, if there is a width in the depiction of opening of the aperture as much, the portrait can run without problems.
I feel that a line with a slightly soft feeling will give out the texture of the skin just right.

However, it seems necessary to carefully check the white balance carefully.
In addition to checking the camera’s monitor, it may be a slightly scary degree of yellowing unless it is properly checked on the PC.

There were a few old shops and shops like remodeled old houses.
Nonetheless, it may take a little more time if you set the purpose of town shooting only around here.

In fact I actually thought it was a little bit shot and thought about the “Kinutakoen” distance by bus, but if I go with it seems to be quite large, it is likely to be another two or three hour course, it is a bit full of stomach I abandoned this time.
Or maybe we will meet on other routes.

Because I wanted to shop in Shibuya, I took a direct bus I picked up at the right time as to whether I should finish in Shibuya this time.
While being shaken by the bus, it would be nice to look at the cityscape you do not know.

However, this bus, a considerable boarding time is long!
Moreover, when the rear part of the bus is raised and standing, no outside can be seen!

It has already been cramped for about 20 minutes and the situation where it is standing and outside can not be seen is quite painful.
When I looked at Google Map, it seemed that it came only about half, so I felt that I wasted the day of town photography.

Development / Adjustment

Since development is currently in Photoshop CC 2017 and we want to leave the characteristics of the lens in the photograph, we only adjust the extent to make the brightness uniform by the exposure dose.
However, this time I shoot at 3500 K at the time of shooting, I adjusted white balance slightly by development. I am correcting especially where the green taste was strong.

Aperture

In this time, depending on the scene, I am choosing F1.8 release and F8 match.

Shutter speed

As the weather was good, it was generally fixed at around 1/1000 depending on the strength and softness of the sun.

ISO

Because of the old lens, the exposure measurement of the camera is pretty shaky depending on the lens and diaphragm and it only matches roughly, so it’s a touch to match while taking.
Basically, since aperture and shutter speed are given priority, ISO may be raised to about 1000 in case of “aperture F 8 · shutter speed 1/2000” even outside the daytime.

White balance

I think this is a special case, but I am taking it at 3500 K even though it is outdoors during the day.
I think that it is considerably yellowing.
